How to Create A Vision Board: A Practical 5-Step Guide
Have you ever felt like your dreams were just out of reach, floating somewhere in the distance? Let’s bring them closer. Creating a vision board can tune your focus in all the right places.
If you’re hearing the term vision board for the first time, don’t worry, I can explain! A vision board is a collage of images, quotes, affirmations, and a list of goals or desires. It turns your thoughts and your idea of a perfect future into a tangible, viewable roadmap and can help you achieve that with confident steps.
As a mompreneur, I have unlocked the true power of vision boards with my own life! In this blog, I want to teach you how to create a vision board in 5 simple steps. For those of you new to this concept, let’s state the obvious…

Do vision boards really work?
Vision boards aren’t yet backed up by science and no conclusive study says they work (or not). However, psychologists have been studying the impact of vision boards on mental health and have discovered that creating and regularly engaging with a vision board can be empowering and therapeutic.
Because it makes you think of realizing your goals, it helps you take concrete steps in achieving a positive outcome. And for many, the “coincidence” is enough to answer the question— me included!
My husband, Adam, introduced me to vision boards when we started dating. He wanted me to be clear in what I wanted— which was a pay increase! Instead of a generic response, he had me bring out my bank statement, cross out the current salary, and write down my dream figure. Surprise: six months later, I was making the exact amount, precise to the dollar.
I also created a vision board for my family life before I had children. One of the photos in the vision board was a picture of two girls and today, I have 2 beautiful daughters of my own. But these are just two examples of almost a dozen of happenings.

How to create a vision board in 5 steps
Vision boards truly are the secret key that helps you unlock a future so bright that you’ll need a pair of sunglasses! If you’re ready to implement a vision board to help you achieve your dreams, I’ll share my 5 practical tips on how to create a vision board:
Step 1: Identify your priorities
Vision boards are your tangible view of a future you envision. Hence, the first step will always be to reflect internally and ask yourself what your perfect future looks like.
As a mom myself, I know you are in the middle of balancing work and family life and it is hard to find the time to stop and reflect, but please schedule some “Me Time” so that you can answer the following questions:
- What are your career aspirations? Do you want a promotion, your own business, or a different job entirely?
- What do you want your family life to look like?
- What are your physical and emotional goals?
- Do you wish to travel freely to specific countries or destinations?
- What do you want your financial situation to look like?
- Do you want to pursue or improve yourself in any specific interests or hobbies?
This part of the process will be all about asking yourself the tough questions and fearlessly accepting the answer that comes from within.

Step 2: Set clear, achievable goals
When you’re reflecting, you’ll maybe come across some goals in your head that might be unrealistic.
For example, if you’re creating a 1-year plan vision board as a marketing intern, and you write your career goal for the year to become a marketing VP, it’s simply unrealistic and would damage your mental health once the realization doesn’t come true.
And so, you’ll want to set SMART goals, ones that are specific, realistic, and motivating. Here is an example that can help you understand how to detail your goals:
- I want to be healthier — I am going to join the local gym and spend X hours every week to achieve X results (weight loss, strength training, etc).
Step 3: Gather inspiring media
Now, this is where the good gets better! Unleash your creativity and source images, quotes, visuals, and links that bring your aesthetic and goal to life. Because you’ll be looking at them almost every day, you want to pick media that captures your essence perfectly, so make sure you research this aspect.
Step 4: Organize, organize, organize
Once you have your media, your goals, and aspirations sorted, it’s time to neatly organize them in a way that appeals to your visual taste. You can play around with the scale, groups, and composition to create something that speaks to you— and something that inspires you!
Tip: If you prefer the digital world, there are many ways to design a digital vision board! If you’d like a tangible vision board in your house, you can simply print out your media and arrange them on a push-pin board.
Step 5: Manifest your dreams
Your vision board is finally complete— at least tangibly. It’s time to bring in some magic of your own. I’ve talked about the power of manifestation before as well, and I’ll say it again for vision boards. To turn your vision boards into reality boards, you’ll need to manifest them by affirmations.
Take the time to view your vision board in the morning, say the quotes to yourself out loud and affirm that you’re resourceful enough to make your vision board a reality for yourself. Only with this positive mindset can the board come true!
